[3:14]  1 tn The verb, though not in the Hebrew, is added for clarification.

[4:13]  2 tn Heb “men equipped for battle.”

[4:13]  3 tn Heb “for war.”

[4:13]  4 map For location see Map5 B2; Map6 E1; Map7 E1; Map8 E3; Map10 A2; Map11 A1.

[7:5]  5 tn The meaning and correct translation of the Hebrew word שְׁבָרִים (shÿvarim) is uncertain. The translation “fissures” is based on usage of the plural form of the noun in Ps 60:4 HT (60:2 ET), where it appears to refer to cracks in the earth caused by an earthquake. Perhaps deep ravines or gorges are in view, or the word is a proper noun (“all the way to Shebarim”).

[7:5]  6 sn The precise geographical location of the Israelite defeat at this “steep slope” is uncertain.

[7:5]  7 tn Or “army’s.”

[7:5]  8 tn Heb “and the heart of the people melted and became water.”

[7:7]  9 tn Heb “said.”

[7:21]  10 tn Heb “Shinar,” a reference to Babylon (cf. Gen 10:10; 11:2; 14:1). Many modern translations retain the Hebrew name “Shinar” (cf. NEB, NRSV) but some use the more familiar “Babylon” (cf. NIV, NLT).

[7:21]  11 tn Heb “shekels.”

[10:13]  12 tn Heb “Is it not written down in the Scroll of the Upright One.” Many modern translations render, “the Scroll [or Book] of Jashar,” leaving the Hebrew name “Jashar” (which means “Upright One”) untranslated.

[10:13]  sn The Scroll of the Upright One was apparently an ancient Israelite collection of songs and prayers (see also 2 Sam 1:18).

[10:13]  13 tn Heb “and did not hurry to set [for] about a full day.”

[13:27]  14 tn Or “it included in the valley, Beth Haram.”

[13:27]  15 sn The Sea of Kinnereth is another name for the Sea of Galilee. See the note on the word “Kinnereth” in 11:2.

[14:15]  16 tn Heb “And he was the great man among the Anakites.”

[17:13]  17 sn On the Israelites’ failure to conquer the Canaanites completely, see Judg 1:27-28.

[17:17]  18 tn Heb “house.”

[19:47]  19 tn Heb “the territory of the sons of Dan went out from them.”

[19:47]  20 tn Heb “Leshem.” The pronoun (“it”) has replaced the name “Leshem” in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[19:47]  21 tn Heb “according to the name of their father.”

[20:3]  22 tn Heb “so that the one who kills, taking life accidentally without knowledge, may flee there.”

[20:5]  23 tn Heb “for without knowledge he killed his neighbor, and he was not hating him prior to that.”

[24:12]  24 tn Traditionally, “the hornet” (so KJV, NKJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV) but the precise meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain (cf. NEB “panic”).

[24:12]  25 tn The LXX has “twelve,” apparently understanding this as a reference to Amorite kings west of the Jordan (see Josh 5:1, rather than the trans-Jordanian Amorite kings Sihon and Og (see Josh 2:10; 9:10).

[24:12]  26 tn Heb “and it drove them out from before you, the two kings of the Amorites, not by your sword and not by your bow.” The words “I gave you the victory” are supplied for clarification.
